THE BIOSPHERE

THE BIOSPHERE

It’s no secret (to those that follow my work) that brutalist architecture and aesthetic is at the top of my list when it comes to my films and photography. That being said; the one place in Montreal that I might consider my absolute favourite spot to bring people to when they visit; The Biosphere.

The Biosphere is one of those iconic spots because it has a great history and great design. It’s also located in a very photographically aesthetic location just across the old port giving it a view of the city.

The Montreal geodesic dome designed by famed inventor and architect Buckminster Fuller was originally a covered structure built for the 1967 International Expo. In the late 70’s its outer acrylic covered shell burned off in a welding accident leaving its steel structure intact.

In my opinion, it actually gives it a more interesting look without the cover and you can now see the skyline through the metal beams that form the geometric pattern.

I’ve lived in Montreal my entire life and the biosphere has always been a place I come to photograph in every type of meteorological condition. It really has a unique look in each season but I would say winter biosphere is the best biosphere.
